The race for quarterfinals slots in the ongoing Estoril Open continues on Thursday with one of the four remaining second-round matchups seeing fourth seed Roberto Agut take on the unseeded Quentin Halys on an outdoor clay court. Both players are making their debuts at the tournament and have also never faced off before. Agut started the season ranked just outside the top 20 at number 21 in the world but subpar performances have seen his top 30 status, which he has kept since 2014, threatened. The former world number nine started the week ranked 28th in the world after winning just four of his last 10 matches. He started the season in superb fashion by sailing through to the final in Adelaide 2 but has failed to live up to those heights in his subsequent tournaments. Though a decent performer on clay, the Spaniard is yet to play on the surface this season and it is up for debate on how he will fare.

Quentin Halys is ranked more than 50 places below Agut in the ATP world rankings and is having a better season, especially coming into this match. The Frenchman has won 14 of the 26 matches he has played thus far with seven of those coming in his last 10 matches. Halys started in Estoril ranked 80th but after winning his first-round match against Nuno Borges is up to 77th in the live ranking. Halys beat Borges in straight sets in his first match on clay this season and should have the momentum to secure a win against Agut.
