Two unseeded players face each other in round three at Wimbledon. Former semi-finalist Roberto Bautista Agut is up against Italy's Fabio Fognini. For the winner, there's a last 16 match against either 12th seed Tommy Paul or 23rd-seeded Alexander Bublik.

Fabio Fognini caused an upset in the last round when beating the ninth seed Casper Ruud. He did so in four sets with the third being the one dropped. That followed his first round straight sets victory over lucky loser Luca Van Assche.

The world number 94 (he was ninth five years ago) is up to 78th in the live rankings. He has a good Wimbledon record and this is the fifth time in six years that he's reached round three. It's the seventh time he's made it to this stage but has never got into round four.

His only other grass court tournament in 2024 was in Mallorca last week where he lost in the second round to Jakub Mensik after leading the match one set to love. This is his 13th match against Agut at all levels and he leads the Spaniard 9-3 but this is their first grass court match.

Roberto Bautista Agut was ranked 112th at the start of this tournament. Like his opponent he was also ranked ninth at one stage in 2019. He's slipped down the rankings but this run has taken him up to 94th in the live rankings.

He's 54th in the Live ATP Race at the time of writing this article on Thursday afternoon. That's 22 places above his opponent, so his form this year has been better. The Spaniard has beaten Maximilian Marterer and Lorenzo Sonego so far here, dropping just one set.
