Robert Whittaker enters this bout as the number three-ranked fighter in the division with a professional record of 26-7 and a UFC record of 15-3.
Since debuting in the UFC in June 2014, ‘The Reaper’ has only ever been beaten by two fighters in Israel Adesanya and current middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis.
After losing to the South African, Whittaker bounced back in fine fashion, beating Paulo Costa by unanimous decision at UFC 298 before knocking out Ikram Aliskerov in June.
Indeed, this match has been long in the making as it was Aliskerov that stepped in for Khamzat Chimaev, who pulled out of that planned bout in June due to an illness.
‘Borz’ has now pulled out of four fights in his career and is returning to the octagon after almost a full year since beating Kamaru Usman in his first match in this weight class.
The Russian is an undoubted force of nature, with a perfect 13-0 record, including six KO/TKO, five submissions and two wins by decision.
In terms of the tale of the tape, Chimaev is three years younger and has both the height and reach advantage.
