Daniel Evans begins his 2024 campaign in Adelaide and will battle the wildcard Rinky Hijikata in the first round. A second-round showdown with either Alexander Bublik or James McCabe will await the winner. Rinky Hijikata began his year in Brisbane and had a strong run before being eliminated in the quarterfinals by eventual champion Grigor Dimitrov. This should have him rearing to go here. The Australian made his Adelaide debut last season but never got past the first round. It didn’t hamper him though as he went on to have a strong season. He compiled a 46-34 record, winning one challenger title and finishing in the semifinals in Hertogenbosch. Hijikata’s strong showing in Brisbane has bumped him up three places in the live ranking to 67th which is a career-high placing.

Daniel Evans starts his season with this match. He will be hoping to have a more favorable season than the one he had last year. The Brit, despite winning only his second tour title with his shock success in Washington, finished 2023 with a losing record. He compiled a 19-27 record and lost 15 of 26 matches on hard courts. Evans, who last was on the court in October, is returning to Auckland for his second appearance after a four-year hiatus. He starts the year ranked 40th in the ATP. Evans has won only one of his last six matches and was forced to retire in his final match of last season.
