Lorenzo Sonego takes on qualifier Richard Gasquet in round one of the Madrid Masters with a tough match for the winner. The scheduled opponent in round two of this outdoor clay court tournament is the top seed Jannik Sinner. Gasquet reached the final of this tournament 19 years ago but had to qualify to get into the main draw this year. He won both his matches in straight sets with a victory over Duje Ajdukovic in the final qualifier. Those two wins have taken him to 113th in the live rankings. Although he did get to the title decider here in 2005, Gasquet hasn't made it past round two since 2016. This year has seen him reach the last eight in Estoril and the Challenger Tour event in Murcia, both on clay. He's 1-1 in past matches with Sonego but it was the Italian who won their match on this surface.

Lorenzo Sonego is up to 49th in the live rankings but only 70th in the ATP Race. His form has been inconsistent this year but he did recently get to the last eight in the Marrakech clay court tournament. He lost to eventual champion Matteo Berrettini in that tournament. In Monte Carlo he reached the last 16 and that included wins over Roberto Bautista Agut, David Goffin and Felix Auger-Aliassime before losing to Ugo Humber. He'll want a better time than he had last week when losing in the first round in Bucharest. We tip him to get the win here.
