These two players had one thing in common at the start of the week. Neither Daniil Medvedev or Reilly Opelka had ever won a main draw match at Roland Garros. That's all changed now and second seeded Medvedev (who could become world number one at the end of this French Open) takes on Opeka in the third round. Medvedev had won just one match on clay this year before this tournament began but has had wins over Andrey Bublik (straight sets) and Tommy Paul in four after losing the first set. He still hates clay but with players such as Tsitsipas, Zverev and Ruud in his half of the draw, he needs to get a lot better on this surface to survive.

Reilly Opelka is the world number 35 but some absences saw him made the 32nd seed. He's 6ft 11in and has a powerful serve. Before this week he had a 6-9 record but most of his wins came in the Rome Masters. Despite a poor record on clay he made it to the semi-finals before losing to Rafael Nadal. He's had wins over Andrej Martin and Jaume Munar, This is a lot tougher but he can give Medvedev problems. The second seed can progress but much harder matches lie ahead of him.
