World number 99 Rebecca Peterson takes on qualifier Lesia Tsurenko in the quarter finals of the Transylvania Open. Peterson started this week as the world number 99 but is up to 88 in the live rankings. A win her will take her into the top 80, still a long way below her best ranking of 43rd two years ago. The Swede began the year in 55th position but the expiring of some good past results has hit her ranking. Petersen is a player in form though. She recently got to the semi-finals of the Astana Open and then won an ITF tournament held in Santa Fe, California. That good form has continued this week with wins over Jana Fett and Irina Bara for the loss of just seven games.

Lesia Tsurenko began this tournament ranked 127th in the world but two years ago was as high as 23rd. 2018 saw her reach the US Open quarter final but her form has not been good in recent years. Tsurenko had to qualify to get into the main draw and won two matches in straight sets to do so. This week has seen the Ukranian beat a wild card entrant and a qualifier to reach the last eight. Those wins were over Andreea Prisicariu and Anastasia Gasanova, both in straight sets. This is her first quarter final since March of last year. Peterson leads her 2-1 in previous meetings with the only Tsurenko win being five years ago. Back Peterson to get the win.
