Sixth seed Cori Gauff looks to continue her good form this yeear. The American takes on unseeded Rebecca Marino in the second round of the Miami Masters. The winner will face either 27th seeded Anastasia Potapova or recent ATX Open winner Marta Kostyuk in round three. Gauff reached the last eight at Indian Wells last week, losing in straight sets to Aryna Sabalenka. That was the fourth time in five singles events this year that Gauff has reached at least the last eight. Her best performance this year has been winning the Auckland title in January. While the American is sixth in the latest ranking list, she's seventh in the Live WTA Race based on ranking points earned this year. Gauff will be looking for a good run in this outdoor hard court tournament. Her previous best in Miami is a fourth round in 2022 having not made it past round two in her other couple of appearances here.

Rebecca Marino began this tournament ranked 83rd in the world. The Canadian has been as high as 38th but that was achieved 12 years ago while her opponent was at school. Marino had a good first round win over world number 43 Yulia Putintseva winning in straight sets, though a tie-break was needed in the first set. That win has taken her up five places in the live rankings. Marino had lost three of her previous four matches before that first round win in Miami. Only once this year has the 32-year-old made it to the last 16 of a tournament.  In the Live WTA Race, the Canadian is only 75th on the list. This is the first time that Marino has made it past the first round of this tournament. Her only previous match against Gauff was in last year's French Open. Gauff won that in straight sets and didn't lose a game in the second. That was played on a clay court though.
