Liam Broady is the 17th seed in the Indian Wells qualifiers. He takes on Ramkumar Ramanathan in the first round. The winner faces either Chris O'Connell or fourth seed Kevin Anderson.for a place in the main draw. Broady is ranked 124th but was a career high 116th last month. The British player won three qualifying matches to reach the first round of the Australian Open, losing to Nick Kyrgios in straight sets. He had a good run in Dallas in an ATP 250 tournament getting to the last 16 and also qualified for the main draw of the Delray Beach Open. He's playing at Indian Wells for only the second time in his career. His previous appearance was in 2018 when losing in the first qualifying round to Norbert Gombos.

Ramkumar Ramanathan is ranked 170th in the world and is the Indian number one. He was as low as 185th at the start of last month and his highest ranking is 111th achieved four years ago. 2022 didn't get off to a good start for the Indian as he lost his first five matches with two of the losses against players ranked outside the top 200.  A win finally came in an ITF tournament representing India against Denmark but his opponent was ranked 824th at the time. He won again but this time against the world number 785. This is his first tournament since those wins at the end of February and start of this month.
