It’s 2020 and Rafael Nadal is still trying to win his first Paris Masters title. He hasn’t even made it to the final since 2007 with three semi-final appearances since them. Nadal hasn’t competed in this event every year though. He decided to take part this year, despite having already qualified for the upcoming tour finals. Nadal hasn’t had it all his own way this week. He had to come from behind to beat Feliciano Lopez in his first match. He won the first set against Jordan Thompson 6-1 but had to go to a tie-break to clinch a straight sets win. He’s won two of his last three tournaments, including beating Novak Djokovic in the final of the French Open. Wins this week and in the tour finals could see him end the year as world number one.

He faces ninth seeded Pablo Carreno Busta for a place in the last four. His opponent has so far beaten Hugo Gaston, Jan-Lennard Struff and Norbert Gomos to reach the quarter finals. Busta reached the semi-finals in New York and the last eight at the French Open. He went off the boil a bit after that though with last sixteen defeats in both Antwerp and Vienna. Busta has lost all six of his previous matches against Nadal, including two this year. He’s only ever won one set against Nadal and that was four years ago. If he were to win this tournament, it might just get him into the tour finals. It’s a big ask though and the tip here is for Nadal to win in straight sets.
