Quentin Halys is making his Swiss Open debut. He defeated Nicolas Moreno in his final qualifying match in straight sets for a ninth victory on clay, improving his record to 22-17. The Frenchman now is seeking to win for the first time this year in the main draw at a tour event on clay.

He has alternated between the tour and challenger circuits but his best performances have come in the latter. Before arriving in Gstaad, Halys had a third-round finish at Wimbledon as a qualifier. That was his best-ever result at the major. Advancing to the main draw here has moved him up 13 places to 179th in the live ranking.

Richard Gasquet has returned to Gstaad after a year away. As a former champion here, he will hope to maintain his record of never losing in the first round. The veteran Frenchman triumphed here in his debut in 2006 and then finished as runner-up four years later.

Gasquet is having a topsy-turvy year but has still outperformed Halys at tour level. The 16-time tour champion has compiled a 22-22 record and won half of the 20 matches he played on clay. Throughout his career, he has been an exceptional clay player, the reason why the highlight of his season has been on the surface. Gasquet starts the week up five places to 127th in the live ranking.

This will be the players’ first-ever encounter and the winner will play Stan Wawrinka or Lukas Klein in the second round.
