Fifth seed Qinwen Zheng and the unseeded Leylah Fernandez will battle in the third round in Doha. A quarterfinal showdown with either Elena Rybakina or Emma Navarro awaits the winner. Qinwen Zheng is having a superb start to the year. The Chinese number one has won nine of 11 matches with all coming on hard court. The highlight of her season so far was her run to the semifinals in Melbourne. This is also her best-ever result at a grand slam and she seems to have carried the momentum with her to this event. Zheng defeated Magda Linette in three sets to begin her Qatar Open campaign. Her blistering start to the year has moved her into the WTA top 10 and is now ranked seventh in the world.

Leylah Fernandez is also having a strong start to the year and has won four of the six matches she has contested. All six matches have been played on hard courts. The Canadian impressively came back from a set down against Paula Badosa in the second round to secure passage to this round. She lost 6-0 in the opening set but gave up a combined five in the following two sets. Fernandez, who is making her main draw Doha debut, has moved up three places to 35th in the live ranking. Having defeated Zheng in their only other encounter, the former world number 13 will be confident of a win here. That was two seasons ago in Monterrey, a tournament she would go on to successfully defend.
