After qualifying from Group D of the preliminary round, the Netherlands now face Qatar. This is their first of three matches in Group II of the main round of the 2023 Men's World Handball Championships. The Netherlands won two of their three preliminary round matches gaining successes over Argentina and North Macedonia but losing to Norway. They carry forward two points into this main round courtesy of their win over Argentina who also qualified for the main round. That puts them in fourth place in this group and two points behind leaders Norway and Germany. The Netherlands have to play Germany and Serbia after this match. Two more points should be earned against Qatar and that'll make the match against Germany a must-win game if they want to finish in the top two and reach their first world championship quarter finals.

Qatar have it all to do in this main round group. They won one of their three games in preliminary round E but that was against Algeria who finished bottom. That means they qualify for the main round but have no points so far in this main round. They lost to both Germany and Serbia in the preliminary round.  The 2021 world championship saw them finish eighth but they face a tough task equalling that feat this time around. Following this match against the Netherlands, Qatar have fixtures against Norway and Argentina. Back the Netherlands to get a narrow win here and use a -2,5 goal handicap.
