Ukraine take on Portugal in the last 16 of the European Volleyball Championships. Whoever wins this match will face either Turkey or Slovenia in the quarter finals. Ukraine are ranked 16th in the world which is six places higher than their opponents. They have only once before reached the last eight of the European Championships. That was in 2019 and two years ago they lost at this stage of the tournament. They finished third in Pool B to qualify for the knockout stages with six points from their five matches. It was a bit of a struggle though as they lost their first three matches against Slovenia, Croatia (after leading 2 sets to one) and Bulgaria. To finish in the top four they won a five-setter against Finland and then had a straight sets victory over Spain to finish third.

Portugal also reached this stage of the European Championships two years ago and lost to the Netherlands. They finished second behind France in Pool D with nine points from their five matches. After beating Romania in their opening game of these championships, they then lost to France 3-1. Up next for them were Greece and a straight sets win looked to be on the cards but they let slip a 2-0 lead. It went to a final set and and the Greeks completed a brilliant recovery. Portugal got back into winning ways with a victory over Israel and in their final pool match came from 2-1 down to defeat Turkey. This could be a close match and we go for Portugal to win with a 1.5 sets start.
