Pittsburgh Penguins vs Washington Capitals Prediction & Betting Tips - NHL
by Matthew Newman | in NHL Predictions
The 17-11-6 Washington Capitals are on the road at the 18-13-4 Pittsburgh Penguins in the early hours of Wednesday morning. This has been a classic matchup for the last decade and a half with Alexander Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby, two of the greatest talents that the NHL has ever seen. Crosby is having an excellent season, with 20 goals to his credit to this point which leads the team. Jake Guentzel leads the team in points with 40, including eight in his last six matches to push him past the 450 barrier in his career. This season had started as a struggle for the Penguins, sitting seventh of the eight teams in the Metropolitan Division. They are only four points behind the Carolina Hurricanes who are second so things have become tight. They have won their last five home games in a row and there is no team in the NHL that the Penguins get up for more than when the Capitals come to town.
The Capitals have the same amount of points as the Penguins but sit two places higher in the standings. They have lost their last four games and things will not get any easier on the road to their biggest rivals. Just 21 points lead the team, shared by Dylan Strome and Ovechkin. Prior to two goals in his last five games, Ovechkin has suffered a 14-game goalless streak, the longest of his career. Things have fallen off a cliff for him this season after getting 42 goals last season and 50 the one before. One plus for the Capitals this season has been the emergence of 23-year-old Aliaksei Protas. The Belarusian had just 15 points in 58 games last season, quickly past that with 18 in his first 33 matches this season.
