Pittsburgh Penguins vs Toronto Maple Leafs Prediction & Betting Tips - NHL

by Joseph King | in NHL Predictions

Tuesday night in the NHL sees the Toronto Maple Leafs and Pittsburgh Penguins facing off at the PPG Paints Arena. The hosts had previously been on an awful seven game losing streak before back-to-back road victories over Washington and Toronto snapped them out of their funk. The Penguins would however taste defeat yet again in their last outing, falling 5-4 to Montreal in overtime. They’ll look for their second victory over the Leafs in the past four days while Toronto will attempt to make it two consecutive wins following their 3-2 win over Vancouver.

Pittsburgh Penguins - Toronto Maple Leafs: Form Analysis

The Maple Leafs sit second in the East with a record of eight wins, five losses and three overtime losses for 19 points. They’ve struggled on the road, however, with only two wins from their seven away trips compared to a strong 6-2-1 home record. Pittsburgh will be hoping they turned a corner in recent matches with two wins and a point in an overtime loss over their last three finally ending their seven game losing skid. The Pens sit second from bottom in the East with an overall record of six wins, six losses and three overtime losses.

Pittsburgh Penguins & Toronto Maple Leafs Squad Analysis

The Maple Leafs are still dealing with somewhat of an injury crisis after their top two goalies went down. In their place has been Erik Kallgren, who has performed well-enough in their absences. They did get one of the two back in practice recently in Ilya Samsonov, although Toronto is unlikely to rush him back in the lineup with Kallgren playing decently.

Pittsburgh Penguins - Toronto Maple Leafs Key Points

  1. The Maple Leafs have only one win and four losses over their past five away matches.
  2. Toronto is scoring only 2.81 goals per game through 16 games this season, a significant drop from the 3.80 goals per game last season which ranked second.
  3. Pittsburgh has been a strong home team this season, going 3-1-1 at the PPG Paints Arena.
  4. The Penguins have won their last three consecutive meetings with Toronto at home, outscoring them 18-4 during that stretch.

Our Pittsburgh Penguins vs Toronto Maple Leafs Prediction

We’re going to back the Pittsburgh Penguins to get the win in this game. While their current standings may be vastly different with Toronto sitting second and the Pens sitting 15th, it’s interesting to note that these teams are almost equal in the bookmakers current odds to win the Stanley Cup: the Leafs are about 13/1 while the Penguins are 16/1 to win the championship. With Pittsburgh’s excellent home performance coupled with Toronto’s struggles away, back the Pens to get another win over the Leafs in front of their own fans.
