The 25-16-6 Philadelphia Flyers host the 24-18-5 Tampa Bay Lightning early on Wednesday in an Eastern Conference clash. As things stand, the Flyers are 2nd in the Metropolitan Division even though they are only 17th in goals for and 12th in goals against in the league. There is no standout player on the Flyers these days but they have a good team spirit and spread the points around. Travis Konecny is their top point-getter with 42 points, the only Flyer so far to make it past that threshold, though they have Joel Farabee on 39. Of their top 10 in points scored this season, five are aged 24 or younger which is a great sign that the Flyers have a chance of getting competitive again. A five-game win streak was ended by the Colorado Avalanche in this building two games back, losing to the Ottawa Senators last time out. That is the kind of game that the Flyers need to be winning given the Sens are bottom of the East. There were 19 goals combined in those two games which was great for any neutrals watching who enjoy seeing the puck in the net.
A 2-1 defeat in Detroit against the Red Wings snapped a five-game win streak for the Lightning. This is the last of three on the road before a pair at Amalie Arena before the All-Star break. They have alternated losses and wins for their last 11 on the road, unable to gain any traction to take up the position that most fans are used to seeing them in, in the standings. Nikita Kucherov is having another remarkable season, just a point behind the NHL lead. The 30-year-old recently went past the 800 mark for his career, a level that puts him in the top 180 to ever play the game in terms of points scored. The big issue for the Lightning this season has been at the back, the 25th-best team of the 32 in goals conceded. Goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy is not having one of his better seasons, a .901 save percentage and a 2.83 goals against average are the worst of his 10-year career. He was injured to start this season and it has shown, not able to get close to his peak form so far.
