Philadelphia Flyers vs Pittsburgh Penguins Prediction & Betting Tips - NHL
by Matthew Newman | in NHL Predictions
The battle for Pensylvannia this season continues as the 11-10-2 Pittsburgh Penguins head to Philadelphia to take on the 12-10-2 Flyers. There is no love lost between these teams and after only meeting at the weekend, there are scores to be settled after the Flyers won 4-3 in a shootout in the early hours of Sunday morning. That game was in Pittsburgh with both teams having more success on the road so far this season. The powerplay has always been a strength of the Penguins but this season it has been terrible. Both Kris Letang and Erik Karlsson have been outstanding down the years and the quality of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin has been more than enough. This season they are only scoring on 10.9% of their powerplay opportunities, 28th of the 32 teams in the league. They were 21.7% last year and 21.9% over the last five seasons combined. That has to improve at some point and when it does, they will be dangerous given only five teams have shipped less goals this season.
So far this season, the Flyers have been pretty much middle of the pack in categories on both the offence and defence but that is no bad thing for them given that they work hard as a complete unit. They do not have any stars on the team which allows them to focus on the fundamentals and while that does not make them an exciting team to watch, they are well drilled and all the players know what is demanded of them in their role. John Tortorella is not everyone's cup of tea when it comes to a head coach, but he demands players work hard and he has the Flyers playing his brand of hockey which is making them a hard team to play against. Their hard hitting nature does come at a price, they have taken 280 penalty minutes which is fifth most in the league. A top 10 penalty kill has dug them out of most of those but it is a dangerous game to play against a team who are due.
