A battle between the last two Eastbourne champions will unfold on Tuesday when Petra Kvitova faces Jelena Ostapenko. The winner of this first-round duel will play the wildcard Harriet Dart next. Kvitova defeated Ostapenko in the final here last season and will hope for the same result as she starts her title defence. She has won six of the last 10 meetings with Ostapenko with the last coming in March at Indian Wells. The two-time Wimbledon champion arrives for this match after winning the German Open. Making her season debut on grass in Berlin, the Czech breezed past her opponents and won the title without dropping a set. This strengthened her hold on ninth place in the WTA world rankings and moved her to 22 wins in 29 matches. Kvitova has won two titles this season.

Jelena Ostapenko also arrives at Devonshire Park as a champion. The Latvian won the Birmingham Classic in what was her first tournament on grass this season. She starts the week ranked 17th in the live ranking. Ostapenko has compiled a record of 24 wins and 12 losses with five of those victories coming on grass. Having defeated Kvitova four times before, once on grass, Ostapenko will be confident of winning. She has made the final in her last two appearances in Eastbourne and will expect nothing less this year.
