Caroline Wozniacki continues her comeback with a US Open second round match against 11th seeded Petra Kvitova. The third round will see the winner of this match take on either 24th seeded Magda Linette or unseeded Jennifer Brady. Wozniacki was ranked 623rd at the start of this outdoor hard court Grand Slam. Her first round victory over qualifier Tatiana Prozorova has taken her up to 425th and can climb as high as 313th if reaching the third round. Wozniacki reached the final of the US Open in both 2009 and 2014 with three other appearances in the last four. Not since 2019 has she played in this tournament and before this tournament her last Grand Slam was the 2020 Australian Open. Her comeback to the WTA Tour began earlier this month with tournaments in Montreal and Cincinnati with one win and two defeats. One of her losses was to Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova, losing in straight sets. This is her 15th match against Kvitova and she trails 8-6. They first faced each other in 2009 and their last match was five years ago and Kvitova has won four of their last five matches.

Petra Kvitova is having a memorable summer because she recently got married. The 11th seed is still trying to get past the last eight stage of the US Open. Two fourth rounds have been reached in the past three years. Kvitova first played in this Grand Slam in 2007 and only four times has she failed to reach round three. Recent years haven't gone too well for her in Grand Slam events. The last time she reached a quarter final was three years ago. The first round saw her beat unseeded Cristina Busca in straight sets.
