Pedro Martinez and fellow unseeded player Luciano Darderi will face off to begin their Australian Open campaigns. The winner will then play Lucas Pouille or Alexander Zverev for a place in the third round. Read on for our prediction of this match.

Martinez is having an unconvincing start to the season and will be keen to switch things up, for a prolonged stay in Melbourne. The Spaniard has lost two of his three matches and has picked up from his dwindling form from last season.

Martinez, who is coming off a first-round exit in Auckland, lost four of his final five fixtures in 2024. A one-time tour champion, Martinez starts his run in Melbourne in 43rd place in the ATP.

Luciano Darderi defeated Martinez on grass in their first and only matchup last June in Mallorca. He will hope for a similar result as he seeks to claim his first win since October.

The Italian has also started the season in poor form as he ended the last. He hasn’t won any of his last six matches and has lost both of his duels this season.

The 22-year-old, who has won just one set in his last six matches, lost in Hong Kong and then Auckland. He sits just one place behind Martinez in the world rankings.
