Second seed Alexander Zverev will take on unseeded Pedro Martinez in the second round of the Australian Open. The winner of their second career meeting will play the winner of the tie between Arthur Cazaux and Jacob Fearnley next. Below is our prediction for this match.

Pedro Martinez secured victory in his opening-round tie against Luciano Darderi by way of retirement. The Spaniard had won the first set and was up 4-1 in the second when Darderi retired with chest discomfort.

He now targets to advance to the third round in Melbourne for only the second time. Martinez, who has moved up to 42nd in the live ranking, has won two of four fixtures this season.

Alex Zverev was clinical in his opening-round tie against the wildcard Lucas Pouille. The German won the match in straight sets and relinquished 12 games to the Frenchman.

He has now won his three matches this season. The win over Pouille was Zverev’s ninth successive opening-round tie victory in Melbourne.

His sole first-round loss came on his debut here nine years ago. The world number two is defending the 800 points won in his second run to the semi-finals last season.

Zverev defeated Martinez in straight sets on his way to the Hamburg Open final last season.
