Paula Badosa caused a massive upset in this tournament when beating world number one Ashleigh Barty in straight sets. Now she takes on the 15th seeded Veronika Kudermetova for a place in the final. Badosa is ranked 71st at present but her results this week will take her higher than her best ever ranking of 67. The Spaniard will be out for a bit of revenge in this match. Her year began with a tournament in Abu Dhabi, where she lost to Kudermetova in three sets in the last 16 after beating two players ranked above her. This is her second semi-final of the year after reaching the last four in Lyon in March. She lost to the eventual winner Clara Tauson, who was ranked outside the top 100 at the time. Ashleigh Barty isn't her only major scalp of this tournament. The second round saw her defeat fith seeded Belinca Bencic in three sets. All a bit of an improvement after having to come from a set down in the first round to get the better of Varvara Gracheva.

Veronika Kudermetova is ranked 38th in the world. The Russian will make it into the top 30 for the first time if going on to win this tournament. She's bidding to reach her second final of the year after her good run in Abu Dhabi in January. That didn't just include a win over her opponent in this match but also a victory over second seeded Elena Svitolina. It took fourth seeded Aryna Sabalenka to deny her the title. Kudermetova made it to round three of the Australian Open before losing in straight sets to Simona Halep. Her next three tournaments didn't go well with just one win but she did have tough draws. This week has seen her in top form with no sets dropped in her four matches. Her quarter final saw a straight sets win over Sloane Stephens. Go for her to win this semi-final.
