Paula Badosa and fellow wildcard Ashlyn Krueger will battle for the second time this year, in their scheduled Indian Wells tie. They will square off in the first round with the winner going on to play fourth seed Elena Rybakina. Paula Badosa defeated Krueger in the first round in Doha in February in what was their first-ever career meeting. This coupled with her previous successes in this WTA 1000 event should have her confident of a winning start. Badosa is a former champion here. She triumphed three seasons ago in what was her main draw debut and also produced a semifinal finish the next year. Last season, she exited in the third round. The Spaniard is having a turbulent season as she continues with her journey back to full fitness. She has won four of the nine matches she has played which have all taken place on hard courts. The former world number two is currently down to 76th in the live ranking. Badosa was forced to retire in her last outing in Dubai.

Ashlyn Krueger has been in good form in recent weeks after a slow start to the year. She has won six of her last nine fixtures and this has allowed her to tie her record at 7-7. The American was eliminated in the second round in Dubai in her last outing. With Badosa struggling with her fitness, Krueger will hope this is the year she finally wins a main draw match here. The 19-year-old has played three times previously at Indian Wells and has been eliminated each time in the first round. This is her fourth successive appearance. Krueger hasn’t played past the second round at the six tournaments she has competed in this season. She is currently ranked four places above Krueger at position 72 in the live ranking.
