Paula Badosa caused a big shock in the last round when beating Barbora Krejcikova. The 21st seed takes on Angelique Kerber (seeded 10th) in the Indian Wells quarter final. Waiting in the semi-finals will be either Anett Kontaveit or Ons Jabeur. Badosa has had some big wins this year, the best being a win over world number one Ashleigh Barty on clay in Charleston. One title has been won in 2021 by the Spaniard, that was on clay in Serbia, though no top 50 players were beaten. Her best recent appearance was a quarter final at the Western & Southern Open, where she defeated Aryna Sabalenka. To get to the last eight at Indian Wells, Badosa has beaten Dayana Yastremska (in three sets), 15th seed Cori Gauff (just four games lost) and then third seeded Barbora Krejcikova, losing only six games.

Tenth seeded Angelique Kerber has been climbing back up the rankings this year. The former world number one had slipped down to 28th but is up to 15th now and a place higher in the live rankings. The year didn't begin well for the German with no quarter finals until the grass court season began. A tournament in Homburg was won and then the semi-final reached at Wimbledon. There has been recent success on hard courts with a run to the semi-finals of the Western & Southern Open. This week has seen her beat Katerina Siniakova and Daria Kasatkina (both in three sets) and then Ajla Tomljanovic for the loss of just five games. This looks like being a tight match and the slight preference is for Badosa, who looks in the better form.
