Nadia Podoroska has climbed 133 places in the rankings during the past 12 months. The number five seed at the Bod Homburg Open takes on unseeded Patricia Maria Tig in the second round. Whoever wins this match takes on either top seeded Petra Kvitova or Ann Li in the last eight. Podoroska is up to 39th in the rankings, her highest ever position. Her ranking has improved eight places since the start of 2021. It was her form in late 2020 that saw her zooming up the rankings with an ITF title and then a run to the French Open semi-final, winning eight matches before being beaten by Iga Swiatek. This year has see her beat Petra Kvitova in the Yarra Valley Classic and most famously, getting a win over Serena Williams in the Rome Masters. Not much has been achieved on grass though and the Argentinian has never made it past the first qualifying round at Wimbledon.

Patricia Maria Tig is the world number 62, six places below her best ever ranking of 56. It's not been a good year for the 26-year-old Romanian who is 151st in the WTA race. Only three of her 11 matches in 2021 have been won. Just one win came in her first five tournaments of the year and at the French Open, Tig lost in the first round to Naomi Osaka in straight sets.
