22nd seed Gael Monfils takes on the unseeded Oscar Otte in the Miami Masters second round. The winner of this match faces either 16th seeded Reilly Opelka or Francisco Carundolo in the last 32. This year has seen Monfls being a lot more consistent than he was in 2021. He began the year by winning a tournament in Adelaide beating Karen Khachanov in the final. That was his first ATP Tour win since February 2020. His good form continued with a run to the last eight of the Australian Open, losing to Matteo Berrettini in five sets. Again that was improvement after failing to get past the third round in his previous five Grand Slam events. Monfils has only played two tournaments since then and most recently he got to the last 16 in Indian Wells beating the then world number one Daniil Medvedev on the way.

Oscar Otte began this event ranked a career high 74th but is up to 70th in the live rankings. The German began the year in 101st place and was outside the top 150 this time last year. He made a slow start to this year though, failing to qualify for two pre-Australian Open warm-up events. Otte lost in the second round of the Australian Open to Lorenzo Sonego. Only in Acapulco this year has he won two matches in a tournament. Neither of the players beaten there were ranked in the top 100. His most recent event was a Challenger Tour event in Phoenix and he lost in the first round there to Rudu Albot who was ranked 120th at the time. Otte beat qualfier Mitchell Kreuger in straight sets to reach the second round of the Miami Masters. Back Monfils to get the win.
