Mirra Andreeva will hope to cause an upset when she battles sixth seed Ons Jabeur at the Australian Open. The two will square off in the second round with the winner going on to play either Diane Parry or Kamilla Rakhimova. Ons Jabeur is making her first appearance of the season in Melbourne. She defeated the qualifier Yulia Starodubtseva in the first round by the loss of four games. It was her first competitive match since the WTA Finals in October. The Tunisian hasn’t had the best of times in Melbourne as she has had in other majors. Only twice has she progressed past the second round and last season was eliminated in this very round. She is currently ranked sixth in the WTA.

Mirra Andreeva has had an excellent start to the year. She will hope to keep this going in what is her Australian Open debut. The Russian defeated Bernarda Pera in straight sets in the first round. It was her fourth win in five outings this year. Before arriving in Melbourne, the 16-year-old recorded a quarterfinal finish in Brisbane. Andreeva is expected to be one of the breakout stars of this campaign as she showed as much in 2023. Last year, she finished with an impeccable 36-9 record. The highlights of her campaign came at the French Open and Wimbledon where she recorded third and fourth round finishes respectively. It is worth noting that before last season, Andreeva had never played at a Grand Slam. She is currently up to 38th in the live ranking which is a career high.
