The third seed Ons Jabeur will attempt to win her second successive tournament on clay this season when she begins her Porsche Tennis Grand Prix campaign. After receiving a bye in the first round, she now takes on unseeded Jelena Ostapenko. The second-round match will be the fourth meeting between the two players. Ostapenko has the head-to-head advantage as she has claimed victory twice. Only one of those matches has been on clay and that was eight years ago when Jabeur was ranked 177th. Ons Jabeur hasn’t been that much active this season as she has only played 13 matches due to injury. After a slow start to the year where she won four and lost four of her first eight matches, the current world number four has taken hold of her season with the recently concluded Charleston Open where she finished as champion, winning all her five matches without dropping a single set. She will hope to use this momentum to win here against Ostapenko and advance even further than her quarter final finish in her debut appearance here last season.

Jelena Ostapenko hasn’t been fortunate to win a title this season but has had a good sarrt to 2023 and has won 13 of the 21 matches that she has played. Her latest victory came in the first round here in Stuttgart where she dominated fellow Grand Slam champion Emma Raducanu in straight sets, allowing the wildcard just three games in the match. The current world number 22 is making her fifth appearance in Stuttgart and will hope to eclipse her best-ever finish here which is also a quarter final berth achieved in 2018. The former French Open champion will hope to use this tournament to help prepare for a second title charge at Roland Garros next month.
