Men's High Jump Final Predictions & Betting tips - Olympic Games

 by Devesh Jaganath |

The Men's High Jump Final at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games is scheduled to take place on August 10 and it promises to be a thrilling contest featuring the returning gold medalists and several hopeful young stars. Let’s take a look at who’s made it to the grand stage and go through our prediction.

After fiercely competitive qualifying rounds, the 12 participants who will be vying for gold in Paris have been decided and the most notable names are those of the returning champions Gianmarco Tamberi and Mutaz Barshim.

Few can forget the scenes that followed after these two were allowed to share the title at Tokyo 2020 and they both qualified to defend their crowns this year. However, this is far from a foregone conclusion.

Tamberi was hospitalised last weekend with a kidney issue and failed his three attempts at 2.27 metres, but still managed to finish sixth in qualifying. Barshim, on the other hand, cleared 2.27 but did so after receiving intense treatment to his calf and failing his first attempt.

Those issues may open the door for a new champion this year and waiting in the wings are USA’s Shelby Mcewen, Sanghyeok Woo of South Korea, Japanese jumper Ryoichi Akamatsu and world indoor champion Hamish Kerr of New Zealand. All four of these athletes also cleared 2.27.

McEwen won the men's high jump competition (2.30m) at the US Olympic Track and Field Trials to book his place at the Paris Olympics.

The dark horses in the field include Romaine Beckford, who created history by becoming the first Jamaican man to qualify for the high jump final at the Olympic Games, and Brian Raats, the only South African in the field of 12.

Our Men's High Jump Final - Olympic Games prediction

While it would be foolish to write off Gianmarco Tamberi and Mutaz Barshim from the competition, the pair have endured fairly significant injury setbacks in recent days and were far from their best in qualifying.

Hamish Kerr is currently showing up as the bookmakers’ favourite but we are going with the American Shelby Mcewen, who was the only athlete to qualify with a perfect record. He is also coming off a very impressive season and came up agonisingly short of pipping Kerr to the World Indoor title. Our Men's High Jump Final prediction: Shelby Mcewen Top Three!
