The Boston Red Sox look to complete the away sweep against the Oakland Athletics in the third game between the two teams at the RingCentral Coliseum. It’s been a disappointing start for both ball clubs who each have a losing record: Boston fourth in the AL East at 26-27 while the As sit bottom of the AL West at 20-35 and are contending with the Royals for the worst record in the American League. An 8-0 shutout win for Boston in the second game of this three game series made it three straight for the Sox who can pull their record back to .500 with a win in this one. They’ll face off against an Oakland team that has only won two of its last 10 and will be looking to end a current five game losing streak. Given the recent results for both clubs, it may be a bit surprising to see the As favored by the bookmakers. Let’s see if we can dive into why that is the case. 

The As are sending Frankie Montas to the mound while the Red Sox give Rich Hill the nod. Montas is Oakland’s ace and despite his 2-5 record, has been pitching fairly well this season. He holds an ERA of 3.20 but has struggled to get the run support from the As bats in the majority of his starts, resulting in Oakland losing eight straight when with Montas as the starter. The last two starts for Frankie Montas saw the 29-year-old give up only three total runs over 14 innings of work as he looks to carry over his strong form into this one. On the other side, Rich Hill has been getting rocked in his recent starts and has seen his ERA balloon up to 4.85. Hill gave up six earned runs in his last appearance and has allowed 14 earned runs over his last four starts, which totaled just 17 innings pitched.
