Nuno Borges takes on Marcos Giron in the first round of the Madrid Masters. The winner of this match faces 25th seeded Sebastian Baez in the second round of this outdoor clay court tournament. Borges began this tournament ranked 74th in the world but was 112th at the start of this year. He has been as high as 63rd after winning two hard court Challenger Tour events held in Monterrey and Phoenix. His clay court season so far in 2023 has produced just one win in three matches. He had a tough draw in Barcelona last week, beating Iyla ivashka but then losing in straight sets to eventual winner Carlos Alcaraz. Borges has won five Challenger Tour events on clay with four other finals reached.

Marcos Giron is currently 13 places ahead of Borges in the latest ranking list but was as high as 55th earlier this year. The American reached three hard court quarter finals this year and has made a steady start to the clay court season. He reached the last 16 in Houston and last week made it to the last eight in Munich before losing to eventual runner-up Botic van de Zandschulp. Giron got to the third round at Roland Garros 2021 and has also reached that stage of the Rome Masters. A win over Borges will equal his best of a second round in Madrid two years ago. This looks like being a tight match and our tip is for Giron to get the win.
