Novak Djokovic defeated the qualifier Jaime Faria in four sets in the last round. It was the second successive time this week that he needed four sets to advance to the next round.

Djokovic, who has dropped to eighth in the live ranking, his lowest ATP ranking since 2022, has won four of five matches. The Serb is seeking a record 11th title in Melbourne.

Djokovic defeated Machac in three sets in Dubai two seasons ago.

Tomas Machac shocked Djokovic on his way to the final in Geneva last season. He won in three sets to claim his first career victory against a top-five-ranked player.

The victory will be fresh in his mind as he takes on Djokovic for a place in the fourth round. Machac has progressed to the third round for a second successive season.

He secured his passage to this round by outlasting Reilly Opelka. The duel lasted three hours and 25 minutes and saw the Czech win 3-2.

Machac, who started the season at the United Cup, has compiled a 4-2 record.
