This is a match that is worthy of any final in any tournament played around the world. However, this clash will decide who goes into the ATP World Tour semi-finals and who will be on their way home. It's even more important for Novak Djokovic as defeat against his great rival will also end his hopes of ending 2019 as the world's number one male tennis player. Djokovic recently lost that postiion to Rafael Nadal and has to win this tournament to have any chance of reclaiming it. Roger Federer made a losing start in this tournament when he was also beaten by Dominic Thiem. He lost that match in straight sets with both finishing 7-5 to the Austrian. He did get a win against Matteo Berrettini winning the first set on a tie-break and then the second 6-3. Federer isn't playing in the Davis Cup Finals next week, so a loss here will end his 2019 season. Federer's most recent meeting with Djokovic was when losing to him in the 2019 Wimbledon final. He has lost 26 out of 48 matches against Djokovic with six of the last seven ending in defeat to him. His last win against Djokovic was on this very court when beating him in straight sets in this tournament, four years ago. Djokovic can be backed to win this match against Federer and clinch his semi-final spot.
