Stefanos Tsitsipas continues his bid to win a third successive Monte Carlo Masters. The second seed faces unseeded Nicolas Jarry in the last 16. Possible quarter final opponents include eighth seeded Taylor Fritz. Tsitsipas began this outdoor clay court tournament ranked third but with so many points to defend is fifth in the live list. He barely had to break sweat in his opening match against Benjamin Bonzi. His opponent suffered a wrist injury and retired when 4-1 down in the first set. Tsitsipas reached the final of the Australian Open but hasn’t made a last eight since. This is his first clay court tournament of the year and he’ll hope a return to this surface will reboot his year. He’s had one previous match against Jarry and lost in three sets. That was four years ago though and played on a grass court.

Nicolas Jarry started the Monte Carlo Masters ranked 58th. He’s up to 51st after reaching the third round. He’s already had a busy time on clay this year with four previous tournaments and a Davis Cup match. His four singles tournaments were all in South America. He had some success too with a semi-final in Rio and then the Chilean won the Santiago title. His European clay court season didn’t get off to a good start with a first round exit in Marrakech at the hands of Andrea Vavassori who was ranked 201st at the time. It’s gone better in Monte Carlo with wins over 15th seeded Borna Coric and then a come-from-behind victory over qualifier Alexei Popyrin. Tsitsipas can get the win here in straight sets.
