Third seed Nicolas Jarry will begin his Argentina Open campaign with a second-round showdown against unseeded Stan Wawrinka. The winner will then set up a quarterfinal tie with either Daniel Elahi Galana or Tomas Martin Etcheverry. Nicolas Jarry is making his season debut on clay in this match. The Chilean started the season battling on hard courts where he has compiled a 4-3 record. He is coming off a Davis Cup run in which he won one of two matches. Jarry has never won a main draw match in Buenos Aires nor has he defeated Wawrinka before. He will be hoping to kill two birds with one stone in this match. The 28-year-old, who lost in the qualifying rounds here last season, is nonetheless a stronger performer on clay. He has so far won 286 matches on the surface in his career. Despite his shaky start to the season, Jarry has moved up one place to 20th in the live ranking.

Stan Wawrinka defeated Jarry the only other time they met. This was five seasons ago in Doha. The three-time major champion, who also is a dominant performer on clay, will be confident of another win here. Wawrinka has never failed to reach at least the semifinals in Buenos Aires. The 2013 runner-up is making his fourth appearance and the first since that run to the final. He began things off with a come-from-behind victory over crowd favourite Pedro Cachin. It was his first win of the season in his second outing. The 38-year-old began the season with an exhausting five-set battle with Adrian Mannarino at the Australian Open. The former world number three has currently dropped six places to 66th in the live ranking.
