Eighth seed Nick Kyrgios will make his season debut on Monday with a first-round battle against unseeded Wu Yibing at the Stuttgart Open. The winner of this match will play either the unseeded Denis Shapovalov or the qualifier Marton Fucsovic in the second round. For Kyrgios, this will be the first Singles match since last October in Tokyo. The Australian has been out for eight months due to a knee injury that required surgery earlier this year. He is a two-time semifinalist in Stuttgart and will hope this inspires him to have another sustained run in the competition. Kyrgios is a decent performer on grass and has a career record of 45 wins and 21 losses on the surface. Before his injury, 2022 turned out to be the 28-year-old’s best season since making his debut 10 years prior. Wu Yibing will hope to take advantage of Kyrgios’ lack of match fitness to win his first-ever game on grass. The Chinese number two has never played a match on grass since making his debut in 2016. He will hope switching to the surface sees him take full control of his season. Yibing is having a topsy-turvy campaign and comes to this match with a record of 15 wins and 10 losses. His last match saw him eliminated from the French Open in the opening round. Despite his evident uncertainties, Yibing has played two finals this season and won his first tour title with his success in Dallas. He is currently ranked 64th in the live ranking after dropping down 10 places due to losing 90 ranking points.
