The ALCS heads to the Bronx with the New York Yankees facing a must win situation after dropping the first two games of the series to the Houston Astros. The Yankees’ playoff lives are on the line here and while a loss wouldn’t technically eliminate New York, only one team in MLB history has ever come from a 3-0 series deficit (Boston in 2004 against the Yankees). Houston has been New York’s bogey team in recent years, eliminating the Yankees from the playoffs three out of the three times they have met up in the last eight seasons. The Astros were able to dispatch of the Seattle Mariners 3-0 to reach this stage while the Yankees required the full five games to get by the Guardians 3-2 in the previous round.

The Yankees will be hoping their significant home field advantage can make the difference here as well as having their ace Gerrit Cole on the mound. The Yanks’ 57-24 home record in the regular season was tied with the Dodgers for the best mark in the league. Houston split their four trips to the Bronx 2-2 in the regular season but the ‘Stros were one of baseball’s most consistent away teams all season. The Astros’ 51-30 away record was the second best in the MLB, behind only the 54-27 Dodgers.

Taking the mound for the home team is Gerrit Cole as the Yankees turn to their best pitcher in the most important game of their season up to this point. Cole had a decent regular season, posting a 13-8 record with a 3.50 ERA, but has proven throughout his career that he steps up when the pressure is on in the postseason. The 31-year-old has a lifetime playoff record of 10-5 with a 2.81 ERA over his 10-year career. On the other side, Cristian Javier takes the hill for the visiting Astros. Javier has quietly been one of baseball’s most consistent starters and if it weren’t for teammate Justin Verlander’s incredible year, would likely be receiving much more of the spotlight. The young righty posted an 11-9 record in the regular season with an excellent 2.54 ERA through his 30 games and 25 starts.

The Astros bullpen has been in fantastic form as well, which adds another level of security to this bet. This is likely to be a nervy, tense affair in a pivotal game three.
