The two best records in the AL face off when the New York Yankees host the Houston Astros for the second of a four game series between these bitter rivals. The Yankees come into this one with supreme confidence after a remarkable comeback saw them score four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to steal a 7-6 victory. The win moves the Yanks record to an MLB best 52-18 as they have opened up a massive 12.5 game lead over the second-place Blue Jays in the AL East. They’ll face off against the AL West leading Astros whose 43-24 record gives them a 9.5 game lead over the Rangers in second. The loss snapped a three game winning run for Houston and they’ll need a strong response here in what many believe could be an ALCS preview. 

Justin Verlander gets the start for the visiting Astros with the 39-year-old hall of famer set to make his 14th start of the MLB season. The two-time Cy Young award winner has had an overall solid season, posting an 8-3 record with a 2.30 ERA, but has struggled with some inconsistent starts in recent outings. Verlander only made it through three innings in his last start against the White Sox, giving up seven runs (four earned) on nine hits in what ultimately resulted in a 7-0 loss. In his last five starts, Verlander has given up 21 runs totaling 30 innings of work; not a good sign when coming up against the league’s highest scoring team. For New York, Luis Severino takes the mound and will be looking to bounce back from a five earned run, five inning performance in his last start. The 28-year-old two-time all star is 4-1 on the year with a 3.27 ERA.
