New York Rangers vs Washington Capitals Prediction & Betting Tips - NHL

The NHL is back from a short Christmas break and the 17-9-5 Washington Capitals will resume at Madison Square Garden to take on the 23-8-1 New York Rangers. The Rangers are second only to the Vancouver Canucks in points this season, enjoying an excellent start to the campaign. This will have a personal meaning to coach Peter Laviolette who spent the past three seasons behind the Capitals bench and saw his team embarrassed in a 4-0 defeat in Washington early in December. That is the only time that the Rangers have failed to find the net this season. Artemi Panarin has been their main points threat with 44 on the board so far which is 5th most in the league. Both Panarin and Chris Kreider are top 10 in goals although Mika Zibanejad is the hot hand, scoring in six of their last seven games. Back-to-back games prior to Christmas saw them lose 4-3 to the Edmonton Oilers before a win by the same score over the Buffalo Sabres in overtime. Periods of lost concentration in both saw goals against so they will need to be more aware now.
New head coach Spencer Carberry saw his Capitals franchise get off to a very slow start. Even though Alex Ovechkin has been anything but his usual goalscoring self this season, they have managed to get themselves into a strong position. He still leads the team in points with 20 but it is a tepid offensive output given his hall of fame career. The main issue for the Caps this season has been the lack of goals as a team. Dylan Strome leads the way with 13, a year on from a career-high in points. A move to Washington has been the making of Strome but the injury to Nicklas Backstrom has been the key thing that has derailed the offence. He has played only eight games this season and that might be it for his career with rumours of retirement flying around. He has missed a lot of time in recent seasons and Washington needs to find another playmaker for Ovechkin to get the great eight back on track.
