A Metropolitan clash in the NHL sees the New York Rangers hosting the Washington Capitals at the famous Madison Square Garden in Manhattan for this Tuesday night encounter. Both teams will be looking to close the gap on the top-seeded Hurricanes as New York and Washington enter this matchup separated by only a point in the standings. The Rangers sit third in the division with 19 wins, 11 losses and five overtime losses, putting them on 43 points and trailing Carolina by seven. The hosts are coming off of a 5-3 victory over in-state rivals the Islanders to bounce back from a loss and pick up their eighth win from the last nine outings. The Rangers have been one of the league’s hottest teams but have somewhat strangely struggled at MSG this season with only eight wins from 18 games on home ice, ranking in the bottom three in the division.
The visiting Caps come in with a record of 19 wins, 13 losses and four overtime defeats to put them on 42 points and just a point behind their opponent today. Washington have been on an impressive hot streak of their own after a 4-1 win over Winnipeg made it four straight victories and nine wins from their last 10. What has really stood out for the Capitals during this winning run has been their suffocating defense. The visitors have allowed only 19 goals in the last 10 games for an average of 1.90 goals conceded per game. Additionally, they have also managed to concede three goals or fewer in each of their last 10 games while banging in 40 goals during that stretch. They enter this game as the underdogs with the oddsmakers valuing the Rangers home ice as well as Washington’s somewhat inconsistent road results as the deciding factors.
