New York Rangers - Edmonton Oilers: Form Analysis

The visitors will be desperate to put an end to a back-to-back losing streak and a run of three losses in their last four when they close out their three game road trip in New York. The Oilers were shutout by their opponent’s city rivals the Islanders in a 3-0 defeat which followed a 5-2 loss at the hands of New Jersey. Edmonton will have to improve their defense which has now allowed eight goals in their last two games in the tri-state area. They may well fancy their chances against a Rangers side that has been struggling to find the net in front of their home fans. The Rangers have just four wins from 10 games on home ice and will return to Madison Square Garden after a four game road trip. New York lost their last outing 3-2 to the Ducks but have only dropped two of their last five.

New York Rangers & Edmonton Oilers Squad Analysis

Crucial to the Oilers chances this season is the continued high productivity of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl who have combined for a total of 27 goals and 39 assists. McDavid, a two-time league MVP, and Draisaitl, the 2019/20 league MVP, will have to be at their best in this one if they are to breach a Rangers side that has been having a solid defensive season. Adam Fox leads the way for the rangers defense, with Ryan Lindgren, K’andre Miller and Braden Schneider make up the rest of what is a very solid unit. They’re backed up by the excellent Igor Shesterkin, who could very well find himself lifting the Vezina trophy at the end of the season for a second consecutive year.

New York Rangers - Edmonton Oilers Key Points

  1. The Rangers rank 28th in home goals scored this season, lighting the lamp just 24 times in their nine home outings.
  2. The Oilers have been slightly better on the road this season, winning five of their nine games compared to just five of 11 at home.
  3. The Oilers have been one of the better offensive sides in the NHL this season, averaging 3.30 goals scored per match compared to the Rangers 3.00.

Our New York Rangers vs Edmonton Oilers Prediction

We’re going to back the underdog Edmonton Oilers to get the road win here and move above .500 on the year. With the Rangers not having been a notably better side at home so far this season combined with the Oilers playing better as a road team, we believe there exists some value in backing the visitors at this price. The duo of McDavid and Draisaitl is a handful for any team in the league and we expect the pair to do some damage against this Rangers team.
