An all-Metropolitan Division matchup early on Thursday morning as the top-of-the-division 39-17-3 New York Rangers host the bottom team, the 19-28-10 Columbus Blue Jackets. The teams met on the 25th in Ohio with the Blue Jackets winning 4-2. The Rangers have lost both games in Columbus this season and had to go to a shootout to beat them in New York. They had won 10 games straight heading to Columbus so will have been very disappointed to see that run come to an end in a game they feel they should have won. They are in the top 10 teams in both goals scored and fewest conceded, starting to pull away at the top of the division after that win streak. Artemi Panarin continues to lead the team in offence, with eight points in his last five games. This is game 650 of his career with already 740 points on the board.
The Blue Jackets have not had much to celebrate this season but the recent drop in form from the Montreal Canadiens has them four points behind them with a game in hand. Climbing past even a single team in the East will do their confidence the power of good. Only the San Jose Sharks have conceded more goals than the Jackets and just four teams have scored fewer so their problems have run deep across the entire team. They have 13 players who are 25 or younger so are trying to rebuild for the future with some excellent young Russians. Kirill Marchenko, Dmitri Voronkov and Yegor Chinakhov all have four points in their last five games so there are some green shoots of growth.
