A battle for New York is set to tip off at Madison Square Garden with the New York Knicks hosting local rivals the Brooklyn Nets for this Monday night NBA clash. Last Thursday’s trade deadline certainly shook up the league with a number of high-profile players finding themselves on new teams. The Nets lost their two star players in Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving but should not be counted out just yet considering the haul they picked up in return. Spencer Dinwidde, Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson and Dorian Finney-Smith make this Nets side one of the deepest in the NBA. Brooklyn showed their depth in their most recent game against the three-seed Philadelphia 76ers, keeping the contest to within one possession before ultimately losing 101-98. This was done despite only one Nets player cracking the 20 point mark. Brooklyn is 1-1 since the blockbuster Kevin Durant trade to the Suns, beating the Bulls 116-105 at home before the aforementioned loss to Philly. The Nets sit fifth in the Eastern Conference with 33 wins and 22 losses.

The New York Knicks come into this game looking to make up some ground on their opponents in the standings. The Knicks currently sit seventh in the East with 31 wins and 27 losses and are a game and a half behind the Miami Heat who hold the sixth and final playoff position that would ultimately avoid having to compete in the play-in tournament. New York is coming off a solid 126-120 home win against the Utah Jazz, their third consecutive home win. Unfortunately for Knicks fans, the players haven’t been able to turn Madison Square Garden into the type of fortress that they would have hoped. New York is a mediocre .500 at the world’s most famous arena, winning 15 and losing 15 of their 30 games so far. Brooklyn will have to focus on slowing down Knicks point-guard Jalen Brunson who is having a career year in his first season in the Big Apple. Brunson is averaging 23.6 points per game on extremely efficient shooting splits of 48/41/86.
