The New York Knicks host the Boston Celtics at Madison Square Garden with both teams getting their 2023/24 season underway. The Knicks were one of the surprise teams last year as they finished with a 47-35 record to secure the fifth-seed. They would upset the fourth-seed Cavs 4-1 in the NBA Playoffs before being knocked out by the Heat in the second round. Head coach Tom Thibodeau will now try to get his team to take the next step forward as they return almost an identical team from last year. There were, of course, some slight additions but the core pieces of Jalen Brunson, Julius Randle, RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley remain. The fans at the Garden should be confident of their team starting off the season with a win considering New York's 3-1 record against Boston last season.
Boston comes into the new season yet again as one of the oddsmakers favorites to win it all. They’re currently tied with Milwuakee for the lowest NBA title odds this year as the Cs are expected to once again go deep. However, can this talented core finally make the breakthrough and lift the Larry O’Brien trophy? A lot of their success will depend on the play of Jayson Tatum, who is currently one of the top-five favorites to win the MVP as well. Tatum averaged a career-high 30.1 points per game last season while also chipping in 8.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists. The 25-year-old could be poised for a mammoth year if his progression as a player continues into the 2023/24 campaign.The Celtics make a few notable offseason moves to try to bolster the supporting staff around Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Kristaps Porzingis faces off against his former team tonight, while Jrue Holiday will also make his Celtics debut.
