New York Islanders vs Toronto Maple Leafs Prediction & Betting Tips - NHL
by Matthew Newman | in NHL Predictions
The 14-6-4 Toronto Maple Leafs head to Elmont to take on the 12-7-7 New York Islanders. The Leafs have been monsters in the regular season in recent years but continue their struggles in the postseason. Back to back 50 win seasons for the first time have been the most successful in the storied franchise but last season was the first time they have won a playoff round since the 2012-13 season. In Auston Matthews, they have one of the top goalscorers in the league but as a team, they have not been the same offensive juggernaut this year, just 14th in the league in goals scored. Two years ago they scored 315, the second most in the NHL. Injuries on the blue line have marred this season, Jake Muzzin has not played a game, and John Klingberg played 14 before a hip injury requiring surgery has ruled him out for the rest of the season. Mark Giordano has a broken thumb and will be missing until the new year which is leaving them looking thin at the back.
The Islanders have started to play much more expansive hockey in recent games which has made them a lot more watchable for neutral fans! They have scored 27 goals in their last six games but have shipped 22 at the other end. The last three of those games have been on their home ice with this the fourth game of a six-game home stand. Matt Barzal has been their top scorer this season with 28 points with Noah Dobson second with 24. Dobson is a defenceman which is a position where the Islanders are also struggling with Ryan Pulock joining Adam Pelech and Sebastian Aho on the injured reserve list. Those 24 points are good for 6th in the league amongst all blue-liners with the 23-year-old really coming of age and showing why the Islanders picked him 12th overall in the 2018 draft.
