New York Islanders vs Edmonton Oilers Prediction & Betting Tips - NHL
by Matthew Newman in NHL Predictions
The 13-14-1 Edmonton Oilers are on the road early on Wednesday morning to take on the 14-8-8 New York Islanders. The Oilers closed out their recent homestand with a disappointing defeat against the Florida Panthers, losing 5-1. That ended a streak of 15 consecutive games where they scored three goals or more. After an abysmal 2-9-1 start to the season, the Oilers have been playing some great hockey with their stars finally beginning to click. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is one point away from 30 this season which would make him the 5th player on the team to hit that level within the first 30 games. They beat the Islanders in Edmonton back in the middle of November. 4-1 was the final score that day but that was before they really started to fire in the goals. The Islanders took the lead after just 40 seconds, the game tied at 1-1 entering the final period before the Oilers special teams took over, twice scoring on the powerplay and once short-handed.
Islanders fans are used to seeing a lot of extra hockey this season, with nine of their last 16 games needing to go beyond the 60 minutes. They are only 4-8 in games across the entire campaign that have gone into overtime or beyond so that is something that they have struggled with. Along with the Seattle Kraken, that is the most in the league so far this season. Brock Nelson has four goals in his last four games and Bo Horvat has three in that time span, that pair are closing in on Mathew Barzal and Noah Dobson at the top of the Islanders' scoring charts but there is a big gap back to the fifth so they are a touch overreliant on their top players. Ilya Sorokin has faced the second most shots in net in the league despite the fact he has played far fewer games than the netminders on either side of him. He is averaging 37 shots against per game which is far too many if the team are to have any designs on making any impression at the business end of the season.
