Sixth seed Jasmine Paolini faces unseeded Naomi Osaka in the last 16 of the Miami Open. The winner of this outdoor hard court tournament will take on either third seed Coco Gauff or unseeded Magda Linette in the last eight.
Paolini has had to win two matches to reach the last 16 of this WTA 1000 tournament. After beating Rebecca Sramkova in straight sets, the Italian took on Ons Jabeur. Paolini led 4-3 in the first set when her opponent retired.
This is only the second time that the 29-year-old has reached the last 16 of a singles tournament this year, the other being at Indian Wells. While she remains seventh in the overall rankings, the Italian is only 22nd in the Live Race.
Naomi Osaka was the runner-up in this tournament three years ago. Since then, the Japanese player has only reached one quarter-final in Grand Slam and WTA 1000 tournaments. The world number 61 is up to 56th in the live rankings.
This year has seen her make it to one final. That was in Auckland in January but after taking the opening set, she had to retire. So far in Miami, Osaka has beaten Yuliia Starodubtseva, 24th seed Liudmila Samsonova and Hailey Baptiste.
