Third seeded Veronika Kudermetova faces qualifier Nadia Podoroska in the Cleveland first round. The winner will be up against either Katerina Siniakova or lucky loser Sara Sorribes Tormo in round two of the Tennis of the Land tournament. Kudermetova received a wild card into this final event before the US Open. The world number 16 needs some match practice as last week saw her lose to Venus Williams in Cincinnati. That's the only match the Russian has played since a last 64 loss to eventual champion Marketa Vondrousova at Wimbledon. This is an outdoor hard court tournament and her best performance in 2023 on this surface was reaching the last four in Doha. That included wins over Barbora Krejcikova and Coco Gauff before losing to Iga Swiatek. That was her second hard court semi-final of the year, the other being in the second Adelaide tournament.

Nadia Podoroska is 71st in the latest ranking list and had to qualify for this main draw. That saw the Argentinian win two matches in straight sets for the loss of 14 games. Podoroska is playing her first hard court tournament since February. One hard court title has been won this year in a WTA 125 event in Colombia but no top 100 players were beaten that week. Since then just one WTA Tour hard court match has been played (a loss to Clara Tauson) before those two wins in the qualifiers. We go for Kudermetova to get the win in this match.
