Fourth seeded Tatjana Maria takes on unseeded Nadia Podoroska in the Chennai Open second round. Maria is the world number 84 and aiming to win her second title of the year. The German won a clay court tournament held in Colombia in April. Since then, Maria has reached four more quarter finals and two semi-finals. The highlight of her year has been getting to the last four at Wimbledon with wins over three top 32 players. Two of her last three tournaments have seen her get to the last eight, a third in four looks likely here. So far in Chennai, Maria has beaten wild card Ankita Raina for the loss of just one game.

Nadia Podoroska began this week ranked 298th in the world but was 36th last year. That ranking was achieved mainly due to a semi-final appearance at the 2020 French Open.  Injury has also kept her off the courts and her 2022 season didn't begin until June. The six Grand Slam events the Argentinian has played since then have failed to see her get past the second round. Podoroska failed to qualify for the main draw at Wimbledon and lost in the first round of the recent US Open. The first round of this tournament saw her defeat Kyoka Okamura in straight sets.
